How to Survive the Summer School Holidays

How to survive the summer school holidays

As we dive into these sun-soaked days filled with endless “I’m bored” refrains, let’s embrace the chaos, stock up on coffee, and remember that wine is basically just adult juice boxes.  Over the years, I’ve picked up a few hacks that have helped me maintain my sanity while keeping the kiddos entertained. Here are some of my best tips. Welcome to the survival guide for the summer holidays – a crash course in keeping your cool while your kids threaten to turn the living room into a glitter-filled battleground. May the force be with us all!

  1. Create a Summer Bucket List
  • Involve the kids in creating a bucket list of activities they want to do during the holidays. It could be anything from a family picnic to a DIY project. Having a list helps with planning and keeps the excitement alive. But don’t feel pressured to do ALL the things, it’s merely a wish list and if you don’t get to everything these holidays it’s ok and a great opportunity for your kids to learn to deal with disappointment. Pace yourself mama!
  1. Theme Days for Variety
  • Assign different themes to each day of the week. For example, “Messy Monday” for arts and crafts, “Travel Tuesday” for a virtual trip or outing, and so on. It adds structure to the week and keeps things interesting.
  1. Set up a “Summer Camp” at Home
  • Plan a week or two with themed activities, games, and even a makeshift tent for a camping experience in the backyard. It gives the kids a sense of adventure without leaving home. Bring out the traditional and lovely low-key games like bobbing for apples, egg & spoon races etc. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous and it’s age appropriate, make a little camp fire in the back yard and roast marshmallows!
  • TIP: those little portable BBQ sets work really well!
  1. DIY Ice Cream Bar
  • Create a DIY ice cream bar with various toppings. Let the kids make their own sundaes. It’s a fun and delicious way to cool down on hot summer days. Go one step further if you’re after a healthier option and make sorbet with frozen banana & frozen fruit of your choice blended with a little liquid.
  1. Collaborative Family Projects
  • Engage the whole family in a summer project. It could be building a birdhouse, planting a garden, or even redecorating a room. Working together fosters teamwork and creates lasting memories.
  1. Water Play Extravaganza
  • Turn your backyard into a water wonderland. Invest in a kiddie pool or a sprinkler. Water play is not only refreshing but also provides hours of entertainment.
  1. Library Passport Challenge
  • Create a “library passport” and encourage the kids to read different genres throughout the summer. Visit the library regularly and stamp their passport for each completed book.
  1. Outdoor Movie Nights
  • Set up an outdoor movie night with a projector or even just a white sheet. Pick family-friendly films, make some popcorn, and enjoy a cosy movie night under the stars.
  1. Mom’s Quiet Time
  • Establish a daily “quiet time” when everyone, including mom, takes a break. Whether it’s reading, drawing, or just chilling out, it helps prevent burnout during the long summer days. It also teaches the valuable lesson to self-regulate and not expect non-stop entertainment.

10. Involve Older Siblings

  • If you have older kids, involve them in planning and organizing activities. It fosters a sense of responsibility and leadership.

11. Plan for Rainy Days

  • Have a list of indoor activities ready for rainy days. Board games, movie marathons, or indoor scavenger hunts can turn a gloomy day into a fun one.

12. Backyard Camping

  • Set up a tent in the backyard for a mini-camping experience. It’s a fun and cost-effective way to enjoy the outdoors without leaving home.

13. Cooking Together

  • Involve the kids in meal planning and preparation. It’s a great way to teach them important life skills while spending quality time together.

14. Screen Time Tokens

  • Use a token system for screen time. Assign a certain number of tokens each day or week, and let the kids decide when to use them. It encourages responsibility and helps avoid excessive screen time.

15. Digital Detox Days

  • Designate certain days as “tech-free” days. Encourage activities that don’t involve screens, such as board games, outdoor sports, or family hikes.

 16. Picnic Packed with Fun

  • Plan a surprise picnic in your backyard or a nearby park. Pack their favorite snacks, games, and a blanket. It’s a simple yet delightful way to break up the routine.

17. Virtual Learning Adventures

  • Explore online resources for virtual learning adventures. Many museums and educational websites offer virtual tours and activities, providing a mix of fun and learning

18. Cool Down with DIY Popsicles

  • Make your own popsicles using fruit juices or yogurt. Get creative with flavours, and involve the kids in the process. It’s a tasty way to beat the summer heat.

19. Themed Cooking Nights

  • Dedicate one night a week to cooking a meal together based on a theme. It’s a fantastic way to bond, and the kids might discover a love for helping in the kitchen.

20. Bedtime Routine for Smooth Evenings

  • Maintain a consistent bedtime routine. A good night’s sleep for both kids and parents ensures everyone wakes up refreshed and ready for a new day of summer adventures.

Remember, every family is unique, so feel free to adapt these hacks to suit your children’s ages and interests. Flexibility is key, and not every day has to be jam-packed with activities. Sometimes the simple, unplanned moments are the ones that create the best memories. Wishing you all a summer filled with laughter, joy, and maybe just a little bit of quiet time for yourselves!
